Twilight: Jacob did not have big of a role in the first book. However, he did do something critical to the story line. He told Bella about the legends, and she realized that Edward was a vampire.

New Moon: When Edward left Bella, he left her bleeding. Naturally she turned to the one thing that could give her comfort...Jacob. They become fast friends, however, it becomes apparent that Jacob wants to be more. And although Bella warns him that she is not into him that way he merely states that he likes a good challenge. One night, he goes through a transformation into a werewolf, and he is told by Sam that he can't go see Bella. Bella had other plans. She goes down to La Push and confronts him. Torn between his want to be with Bella and Sam orders, he pushes her away. But sneaks to her house that same night to give her hints as to whats happened to him. When Bella guesses that he is a werewolf, Jacob's pack is furious saying they knew he would try to find away around it. But when they find out that Victoria is the vampire they have been chasing after and she is trying to reach Bella, they make sure Bella is safe down at La Push. Fast forward: Bella jumps off a cliff...Alice comes back...Bella ditchs poor Jacob...saves Edward.

Eclipse: This book is basically all about Bella choosing between Jacob and (ick!) Edward. In the beginning, Jacob tells Bella that they can not be friends. But once again Bella will not be ignored. She continues to call and write letters which Jacob calls childish. However, his desire to be with her shows once again when he goes to her school to deliver a warning to Edward. He tells her he thinks they can still be friends, and to come see him. Edward refuses to allow it...even going as far as to remove a car part from her truck. But when Edward goes to feed, Bella sneaks back down to La Plush to see Jacob. Fast forward: Bella bounces back and forth between guys...They have to hide her...She breaks Jacob's heart (again)...Figures out she loves him, but she loves Edward more...Leaves Jacob for good this time. :(
